Brackets that hold, gears that turn, enclosures that protect — these are the bread and butter of functional 3D printing. If you need a mechanical part that actually works under load, here’s what to know about 3D printed brackets, gears, and enclosures.

3D printed brackets: stronger than you think

A bracket’s job is simple: hold things together. 3D printing excels here because brackets are usually one-off shapes — a shelf bracket for an odd corner, a 3D printed bracket for shelves, a monitor mount, a garden light holder. Printed in PETG with solid walls, a bracket easily handles everyday loads. The trick is orientation: print the bracket so its layers run across the stress direction, not along it, and it becomes remarkably tough.

3D printed gears: what works, what doesn’t

Yes, you can 3D print working gears — for toys, appliances, and light machinery they perform beautifully. The best material for 3D printed gears is PETG or nylon: both resist wear far better than PLA. Keep speeds and loads modest, design teeth chunky rather than fine, and add a little grease. For a 2010 food processor with a stripped gear, a printed replacement beats buying a whole new appliance.

Enclosures for electronics

Custom boxes for Raspberry Pi, Arduino, and DIY electronics are among the most-printed functional objects in the world. A 3D printed enclosure fits your board, your connectors, and your mounting holes exactly — something no off-the-shelf box does. Ventilation slots, snap-fit lids, and standoffs are all easy to include in the design.

Design rules for functional parts

Walls over infill. Thick perimeters matter more than dense infill for strength.
Round your corners. Fillets distribute stress; sharp corners crack.
Respect layer lines. Parts are strongest across layers, weakest between them — orient accordingly.
Choose PETG for duty. For anything load-bearing, warm, or outdoors, PETG outperforms PLA in every way that matters.
